Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Dallas Cowboys announced the signing of veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde during a Thursday afternoon press conference. Testaverde was released just two days ago by the New York Jets due to salary cap reasons.

With the move to Dallas, the 40-year-old is reunited with one of his former coaches, Bill Parcells.

"Not everyone that plays for Bill Parcells likes him, but they all respect him," said Testaverde. "He is hard to play for, but he is fair."

Testaverde will be given a chance to start over Quincy Carter, who started all 16 games for Dallas last year. Drew Henson is also in the fold at QB.

"There will be competition at quarterback," said Dallas owner Jerry Jones. "We think that this is going to make us better. Vinny came here to play, he came here to compete."

Added Testaverde, "the opportunity to be a starter excites me.

"I am here to help this team win football games, if it is on the field or on the bench."

Drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first overall pick in 1987 after winning the Heisman Trophy at Miami-Florida, Testaverde has thrown for 40,943 yards with 251 touchdowns in his 17-year career. He also spent time with the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens franchise.

Under Parcells in New York, Testaverde led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game in 1998 and made the Pro Bowl, but ruptured his Achilles' tendon in the first game of the 1999 season.

He also helped the Jets to the playoffs in 2001 before losing his starting job to Chad Pennington in 2002.

Testaverde replaced an injured Pennington last season and completed 123-of-198 passes for 1,385 yards with seven touchdowns and just two interceptions, but was just 2-5 as a starter before Pennington returned.
